LITCHFIELD
Country Home
Kevin Dumais and his husband, Charlie, bought and refurbished a three-bedroom clapboard house in rural Connecticut. Major cosmetic renovations included a completely remodeled kitchen and installation of ebony-stained oak floor throughout.
The owners made this weekend house their own with mid-century furnishings, fresh white walls, and a range of inviting textures—turning a humble 1940s Cape into a fine example of updated country chic in the process.

Living Room
The living room showcases a Dumais signature touch of mixing high contrast materials. Hand knotted wool, distressed leather, refined chenille and patinated chrome all strike their own pleasing notes. A 1950’s French arm chair in its original green leather and a Dunbar sofa balance and anchor the room.
Kitchen
Dumais removed the kitchen’s old tile floor and replaced it with ebonized oak. For additional spatial continuity, the wall separating the kitchen and the dining room was knocked down, and the appliances were reoriented to create a U-shaped layout with central work table. User-friendly open shelves, made of reclaimed oak, help to open up the space.
Guest Bedroom
Crisp white linens and a Shaker-inspired bed keep the small guest bedroom clean and simple.
Study
In the study, beige walls were repainted in a luminous pale grey. Many of the vintage furnishings and accent pieces throughout were sourced at nearby shops and Brimfield’s flea market.
Studio
‘Bauhaus country house’ was a mantra of sorts for the project, a nod to clean mid-century lines and the emphasis on utility. The detached garage was refurbished and turned into a studio space.
OUTDOORS
Thanks to a gravel bed and simple retaining wall, the backyard became a casually stylish area for summertime entertaining and hammock-lounging.
